Welcome Week

 Check out the 2017 Fall Welcome Week Events (WW17)

The EGS is running some events to start the new year off well for engineering grad students to McMaster. The School of Graduate Studies, The GSA and some other groups on campus are also hosting some events for both new and returning students.

Wednesday September 6th

9 am to noon  Teaching and Learning Forum  Where:

CIBC Hall, Mills Library, and the MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation, and Excellence in Teaching

All graduate students, teaching assistants (TAs), postdoctoral fellows, and sessional instructors are invited to the 2017 Teaching and Learning Forum. Attend workshops and information sessions on teaching and learning, and engage with your peers. Space is limited in each session. Registration is required.

6:30 pm  Music at the Phoenix  Where: Phoenix Bar and Grill

A Grad Student Welcome event that is open to everyone, so bring your partner, friends, colleagues, and join the fun!

Thursday September 7th

2:30-5 pm GSA Barbeque Where: Phoenix Bar and Grill

Drop by the Phoenix for some tasty treats at this annual free barbecue. Make sure you have your graduate student card!


Friday September 8th

 


9:30-11:30 am Resource Fair Where: CIBC Hall (MUSC, 3rd floor)

Meet representatives from campus offices and hear about their services!

 


2:30 pm Scavenger Hunt Where: GSA office Entrance, outside the Phoenix

Scavenger hunt around campus. Prizes will be rewarded to the winners!

 

Monday September 11th

2:30-4 pm PhD BOUND BUT THEN WHAT? NON-ACADEMIC CAREER OPTIONS FOR PhD’s  Where: CIBC Hall (MUSC, Third Floor)

As a PhD candidate, it’s assumed that you will move through traditional steps towards professorship. The reality? The majority of doctoral graduates end up in roles outside of academia – by choice. But what are the options? How do you find opportunities? If you’re like many graduates of the academic environment, you might find the path to employment not as straightforward as you anticipated – or hoped – it would be. Come hear about the many opportunities that exist for PhD’s beyond academia and how to best position yourself on your chosen path.

 4-6 pm International Graduate Student Resource Fair Where: CIBC Hall (MUSC 3rd floor)

Thursday September 14th

 4:30 pm LGBTQ+ Welcome Where: Gallagher’s Bar and Lounge (171 John St. S.)

Come out and meet fellow LGBTQ+ graduate students at McMaster, have some appetizers and be introduced to the broader Hamilton LGBTQ+ community.

Events can be found on our calendar all year round.

The EGS aspire to be a point of communication for the Engineering graduate student population. One way of doing this is to consolidate all of the events, meetings, workshops etc. that are relevant to graduate students on a single calendar where you can go to see what’s going on. Check it out here.
