Here is a peek at what we got up to this month!
New EGS Members
We’d like to introduce and welcome Arvind, our new CAS department rep. and Maedeh, our new MSE rep. Maedeh is also our new Events officer and she has some great ideas for events this year. Stay tuned!
GSA/SGS Grad Recognition Awards
Engineering was well represented at the Grad recognition awards! Three EGS members were nominated for awards; Adhi & Tim for the Mary Keyes Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service to McMaster and Maedeh was nominated for a Teaching Assistant Excellence award! One third of the nominees for the Teaching Assistant Excellence awards were from Engineering. Special mention should be awarded to Joe Verhaeghe; a mech eng technician who retired this year after over 30 years of service to McMaster and to the 3 profs who were nominated for excellence awards in grad supervision; Dr. Tom Adams, Dr. Ian Bruce and Dr. Wael El-Dakhakhni.
Grad Welcome Week
We’re still coming down from the excitement of what was the biggest welcome week for graduate students yet! The school of graduate studies, the GSA and ourselves hosted many events to welcome (back) new and returning graduate students. From Free BBQ’s to Career Workshops to Pizza Hikes, there was something for everyone.
We had booths at the Grad Fair and the International Grad fair to welcome new students and let them know a bit about what we do and how they can get involved. We hosted a scavenger hunt for new students as a fun way to show them important locations on campus that would be useful for them. Congratulations to Mech. Eng. student Michael Zlatin who won the $100 Phoenix gift certificate in the scavenger hunt! We also had the Video Contest Awards Screening Event where we announced the prizes. Congratulations again to the grand prize winners, The Scienticians from Eng. Phys. on their fantastic video. All of the department winners can be found here. Finally we had a pizza hike around Cootes Paradise and ending at the Aviary in Westdale. We know we need sunscreen for next time!
- JHE is a construction zone until December! The main entrance is inaccessible due to the expansion of the lobby. More information here.
- There was some confusion about UHIP this year but now that has been resolved. International students can now log on to mysunlife.ca to print their health cards. If you have a TA, don’t forget to apply for the $150 UHIP Rebate!
- NSERC are having a scholarship information event on September 17th. Don’t forget to register if you are interested.
- If you are an international student who previously never needed a VISA to enter or leave Canada, things are changing. Check to see if you need to get an eTA and get it now if you do to save yourself the last minute bother the next time you go to a conference/home. It costs $7 and lasts for 5 years.
